On Friday, 2/27, our SPMS Jazz Band hosted the Leonard Middle School Jazz Band from Old Town, ME for an afternoon of music! Both bands performed for each other and participated in amazing clinics with Craig Skeffington.
LMS jazz band is directed by Shianne Priest and the SPMS Jazz band is directed by Jen Fletcher. Ms Fletcher was able to share with the students that she was a student teacher under the mentorship of Ms Priest, and that Mr Skeffington was her HS band teacher! All three directors are wonderful educators who collaborate to make excellent music education opportunities available for Maine students!

Congratulations to the South Portland Middle School Jazz Band on their performance at MMEA Jazz Festival this weekend. Their efforts earned them a bronze rating!

Under the direction of Jen Fletcher, the band began their journey by qualifing to attend the state festival. They are the first middle school jazz band from South Portland to attend the festival in over 10 years! The future is bright for the jazz programs at South Portland!

MBDA Jazz Festival 2026
A non-competitive festival where we perform for a panel of clinicians (local teachers/musicians), get an on-stage clinic with one of the judges and watch the Portland Jazz Orchestra perform.
A BIG shout out to the South Portland Band Directors for all of the time and passion they put into the Jazz Program & Students. We truly appreciate it!
